Here at Mindfull Mycology, we’re in full fledged growing mode. Last week, we harvested around 50 pounds of Cordyceps mushrooms – Cordyceps take 2 months to grow to maturity – and are gearing up for another even larger Cordyceps grow over the next 2 weeks. Then, it’s another 2 month waiting game before we do it all again! Cordyceps like to be cool (60F) so this is the perfect time of the year for us to grow them. Simultaneously, another room in our ‘Shroom Barn is keeping over 600lbs of Reishi mushroom substrate cozy and warm (72F). We should be harvesting those beautiful mushrooms, which take about 3 months to reach maturity, right around the New Year.
We like to use the winter as our main growing period since it’s the slow time for events and markets and because it’s a lot less energy intensive to keep a room 60-70F in the winter then it is to keep it that cool in the hot Georgian summer. As always, we prioritize sustainability. As I like to joke, the transportation costs for procuring most of our mushrooms is simply the amount of calories it takes for me to carry them from our ‘Shroom Barn barn to our extraction lab (~150 feet).
On the extract front, last month we completed the trials of our new Rotary Evaporator – a Vacuum Distillation system – and just this week finished building and setting up our soundproof box that will house our ultrasonic processor, which is how we will now be extracting our mushrooms moving forward. This switch has been a 2 year process. As you can imagine, I’m super excited. This new process will allow us to increase our extracts’ concentration and potency by 30-50%, is far more efficient and sustainable of an extraction system, and is widely supported by scientific study to be the most effective extraction methodology currently out there. It also opens the door for us to be able to make extract-infused products, which we will start unveiling in 2026.
Finally, to coincide with this new release, we’ve given our labels a facelift! We reached out to our friend Hope Christofferson, the artist who designed our original logo, and she created these beauties:
