If you've spent any time in the world of functional mushrooms, Lion's Mane is probably the one that got you here. It's the mushroom that made neuroscientists pay attention. The one that shows up in studies on Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, anxiety, depression, and nerve regeneration. The one that people find clears their brain fog and primes their brain for focus after a few weeks of consistent use.

The hype is real and so is the science but the science is more interesting than most supplement brands bother to explain.

What Is Lion's Mane?

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a striking, unmistakable mushroom, a cascading white mass of long, icicle-like spines that grows on the wounded or dead wood of hardwood trees, particularly oaks and beeches. In the wild, it's often a late-season find, appearing in late summer through fall. It has no gills, no cap, no stem, just that distinctive cascading "mane" that gives it its name.

It's also genuinely delicious. The texture resembles crab or lobster meat, and the flavor is mild and slightly sweet, which is why you'll find it on menus at high-end restaurants as a meat substitute. Lion's Mane crab cakes are a real thing, and they're excellent (we serve them at our foraging and growing workshops every Spring and Fall).

But the culinary world is a footnote. The reason Lion's Mane has exploded in the supplement market is what it does to the brain.

The Key Compounds: Hericenones and Erinacines

Most medicinal mushrooms derive their benefits primarily from beta-glucans — the immune-supporting polysaccharides found in mushroom cell walls. Lion's Mane does contain beta-glucans, and they matter. But the compounds that make Lion's Mane uniquely fascinating are two classes found almost nowhere else in nature: Hericenones and Erinacines.

Hericenones are found in the fruiting body of the mushroom. Erinacines are found in the mycelium. Both have been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier — a significant feat that most compounds can't accomplish — and both stimulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF).

NGF is a protein that plays a critical role in the growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons, the nerve cells that transmit signals throughout your brain and nervous system. Your brain's ability to form new neural connections, repair damaged ones, and maintain cognitive function over time depends heavily on adequate NGF levels. And NGF production naturally declines with age.

This is why Lion's Mane research is generating so much interest in the neuroscience community. A natural compound that stimulates NGF production has implications far beyond the supplement aisle.

Cognitive Function

Cognitive Function, Memory, and Focus

The most direct application of Lion's Mane's NGF-stimulating effect is cognitive enhancement and this is where the research is most developed.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Phytotherapy Research found that older adults with mild cognitive impairment who took Lion's Mane daily for 16 weeks showed significantly improved cognitive function scores compared to the placebo group. Notably, those scores declined again after supplementation stopped, suggesting the effect is ongoing rather than permanent, and that consistent use matters.

Additional studies have found improvements in short-term memory, information processing speed, and mental clarity. The proposed mechanism goes beyond just NGF. Lion's Mane also appears to reduce neuroinflammation, which is increasingly recognized as a major driver of cognitive decline and "brain fog." For healthy adults without cognitive impairment, the research on focus and concentration is less developed but directionally consistent, and the anecdotal reports from consistent users are among the most compelling in the functional mushroom world.

Neuroprotection

Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Neuroprotection

This is where Lion's Mane research gets genuinely exciting and where the scientific community is paying close attention.

Several studies have found that Hericenones and Erinacines can inhibit the formation of amyloid-beta plaques, which are the protein aggregates most strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease. Other research has found that Lion's Mane compounds may protect dopaminergic neurons, the cells destroyed in Parkinson's disease, from oxidative damage.

These findings are primarily from animal and in vitro studies. Human clinical trials at this scale are underway but not yet complete. Nonetheless, the consistency of findings across multiple research groups, and the plausibility of the mechanism, have made Lion's Mane one of the most actively studied (and bestselling) natural compounds in neurological research.

Mood Support

Anxiety and Depression

One of the more surprising areas of Lion's Mane research involves mood. A study published in Biomedical Research found that women who consumed Lion's Mane for four weeks reported significantly reduced levels of anxiety and depression compared to a placebo group. The researchers proposed that this effect may be related to Lion's Mane's ability to stimulate nerve growth in the hippocampus, the brain region most associated with emotional regulation and stress response.

A separate mechanism involves the gut-brain axis. Lion's Mane has shown prebiotic activity, supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. The connection between gut microbiome health and mood regulation is one of the most active areas of current neuroscience research. A healthier gut environment appears to translate, through multiple pathways, into measurable improvements in anxiety and depression markers.

Nerve Regeneration

Nerve Regeneration and Peripheral Nervous System

Beyond the brain, Lion's Mane's NGF-stimulating effects have implications for the peripheral nervous system, the network of nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Research has found that Lion's Mane compounds can accelerate the regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves, which has potential applications in recovery from nerve injury, diabetic neuropathy, and other conditions involving nerve damage.

One study found that rats with nerve injuries given Lion's Mane extract recovered nerve function significantly faster than the control group. While human research in this area is still early, the mechanism is biologically sound and the findings are directionally promising.

Gut Health

Gut Health and Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Lion's Mane's benefits aren't confined to the nervous system. Research has found that it can protect the stomach lining against ulcer formation, specifically by inhibiting the growth of H. pylori, the bacteria responsible for most gastric ulcers, and also reduce inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease.

As with all medicinal mushrooms, Lion's Mane is classified as an adaptogen,  meaning it helps the body regulate its response to stress and return to homeostasis. The gut health benefits and the anti-inflammatory effects likely contribute to this adaptogenic profile alongside the neurological effects.

Why Extraction Method Matters for Lion's Mane

Here's something most Lion's Mane supplement brands don't tell you: Hericenones are found in the fruiting body and are water-soluble. Erinacines are found in the mycelium and are alcohol-soluble. A product made exclusively from fruiting bodies misses the Erinacines. A product made from mycelium on grain misses the Hericenones and delivers a significant amount of grain starch alongside whatever fungal content it contains.

A properly executed dual extract from whole fruit bodies captures Hericenones. By incorporating purified Erinainces (produced by growing mycelium in a liquid ferment medium) into the mushroom liquid extract after extraction, we capture both compound classes, something almost no one else in the industry can say.
