There's a good chance you've already met Turkey Tail. It grows on virtually every downed hardwood log in the temperate forest, fanning out in overlapping brackets of concentric colors like rust, tan, cream, blue-gray, and brown that, with a little imagination, resemble the fanned tail of a wild turkey. If you're a hiker or nature lover, chances are high that you've walked past countless Turkey Tails without ever noticing. Below, you'll learn why that's a significant oversight.

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor, formerly Coriolus versicolor) is not just a medicinal mushroom. It is arguably the most extensively researched medicinal mushroom on the planet. One of the primary compounds derived from its mycelium — PSK, or polysaccharide krestin — is a government-approved cancer therapy drug in Japan. Another mycelium-derived compound — PSP, or polysaccharopeptide — has been studied for its effects on gut microbiome health, antiviral activity, and immune modulation. And Turkey Tail's beta-glucan content rivals Reishi, which is saying something.

What Is Turkey Tail?

Turkey Tail is a bracket-forming polypore mushroom that grows on dead and decaying hardwood trees and logs throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. It's one of the most widely distributed fungi in the world, meaning that if you've spent any time hiking in a temperate forest, you've almost certainly passed it by.

Visually it's distinctive: thin, leathery, fan-shaped caps 2 to 8 centimeters across, growing in overlapping clusters. The upper surface displays concentric zones of alternating colors, most often including combinations of brown, tan, rust, cream, and gray. The underside is white or cream-colored with tiny pores rather than gills. The coloring varies enough between specimens that it gave rise to the species name versicolor, meaning "of various colors."

Turkey Tail is inedible as a food since the flesh is too tough and leathery to eat. Like Reishi, it's used exclusively for its medicinal properties, which is why knowing how to extract Turkey Tail is so important. 

One important identification note: Turkey Tail has a common lookalike called False Turkey Tail (Stereum ostrea), which lacks the white pored underside and has no documented medicinal value. If you're foraging, check the underside, as the white pores confirm Trametes versicolor. Have no fear, though: Stereum ostrea isn't poisonous.

The Two Star Compounds: PSK and PSP

While Turkey Tail contains a full spectrum of beta-glucans, polysaccharides, and other bioactive compounds, two specific molecules have been studied so extensively that they've each developed their own substantial bodies of research.

PSK (Polysaccharide Krestin) is a protein-bound polysaccharide extracted from Turkey Tail that has been approved as a prescription cancer support drug in Japan since the 1980s under the brand name Krestin. It is one of the best-selling cancer drugs in Japan and has been studied in hundreds of clinical trials. PSK works primarily by modulating immune function, stimulating the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, macrophages, and T-lymphocytes that form the frontline of the body's defense against abnormal cell growth. PSK has also demonstrated direct anti-tumor activity by protecting healthy cells and sensitizing cancer cells to the effects of chemotherapy and radiation. It's worth noting that PSK is derived from growing Turkey Tail mycelium in a liquid fermented broth and then isolating PSK from the resulting mycelium-broth matrix.

PSP (Polysaccharopeptide) is a related but distinct compound with a different primary mechanism of action. Rather than working primarily through immune modulation, PSP functions largely as a prebiotic, selectively feeding beneficial gut bacteria while suppressing the growth of harmful bacteria. Its effects on the gut microbiome connect to a broader set of health outcomes than the name "prebiotic" might suggest.

Cancer Research

Cancer Research: PSK and Krestin

The cancer research on Turkey Tail is more developed than any other medicinal mushroom, primarily because of PSK's status as an approved drug in Japan. This isn't fringe research. It's mainstream oncology.

Studies have demonstrated that PSK can inhibit tumor growth and metastasis across multiple cancer types including lung, gastric, colorectal, breast, and esophageal cancers. 

PSK has also been studied as an adjuvant therapy, meaning a treatment used alongside conventional cancer treatment rather than instead of it. Multiple clinical trials have found that cancer patients receiving PSK alongside standard chemotherapy or radiation showed improved survival rates, reduced recurrence rates, and better tolerance of treatment side effects compared to patients receiving conventional treatment alone.

In the United States, the research on Turkey Tail gained significant public attention when mycologist Paul Stamets testified before the FDA about a clinical trial in which his mother, diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, took Turkey Tail extract alongside her conventional treatment and achieved remission. That trial, conducted at the University of Minnesota, was the first FDA-approved clinical trial of a medicinal mushroom in the United States.

As with all medicinal mushroom research, these findings don't make Turkey Tail a cancer treatment. But the depth and breadth of the PSK research is qualitatively different from most natural health research because this is a compound with decades of clinical data behind it.

Gut Health: PSP as a Prebiotic

PSP's most well-documented effect is on the gut microbiome, and the research here is unusually specific for a natural supplement.

In one controlled study, participants administered PSP showed significant increases in beneficial gut bacteria (specifically Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species), the same bacteria targeted by commercial probiotic supplements. Participants also had significant reductions in harmful bacteria including E. coli, Staphylococcus, and Clostridium. These shifts occurred without any dietary changes, suggesting PSP was directly modulating the microbial environment of the gut.

A compound that shifts the microbiome toward a more favorable profile has downstream effects across nearly every system in the body. The specific beta-glucans in Turkey Tail — particularly 1,3/1,6 beta-glucans — have been shown to stimulate macrophage activity, enhance NK cell production, and support the body's ability to mount an appropriate immune response.
