DIY & Extraction Guides
Most mushroom supplement labels say "dual extract." Few explain what it means, and almost none tell you that without it, you may be wasting your money. Here's the science, plainly.
If you've spent any time shopping for mushroom supplements, you've probably seen the phrase dual extract on labels. Most brands use it. Few explain it. And almost none tell you that without it, you may be wasting your money.
This post breaks down exactly what a medicinal mushroom dual extract is, why the science behind it matters, and what to look for (and avoid) when buying.

What Is a Dual Extract?
A dual extract is exactly what it sounds like: the mushroom has been extracted twice, using two different solvents. Each solvent pulls out a different class of beneficial compounds that the other solvent can't effectively access.
The two most commonly used solvents are hot water and alcohol. Together, they capture the full spectrum of medicinal compounds a mushroom has to offer. Separately, they each leave something important on the table.
Triterpenes
Step 1: Alcohol Extraction (Triterpenes)
The first extraction uses alcohol, which targets the class of medicinal compounds known as terpenes.
Terpenes, more specifically triterpenes, are moderately water-insoluble, meaning that a hot water extraction simply can't grab most of them. Yet these triterpenes are critically important. In Reishi mushrooms alone, there are more than 100 distinct triterpenes — compounds called Ganoderic acids and lucidenic acids — known for their adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, and liver-protective properties. These compounds are not even detectable in Reishi mycelium. They're only found in the mushroom fruit body, and only extractable with alcohol.
Want to know an easy way tell if a Reishi extract actually contains triterpenes: taste it. A genuine, triterpene-rich Reishi extract is intensely bitter. If your Reishi supplement tastes like nothing, that's a sign the triterpenes aren't there.
Beta-Glucans
Step 2: Hot Water Extraction (Beta-Glucans)
The second extraction uses hot water via a process called hot water decoction. Hot water is excellent at pulling out beta-glucans, which are complex polysaccharides responsible for most of the immune-supporting properties associated with medicinal mushrooms. Beta-glucans are water-soluble, meaning hot water can extract them effectively.
If a product skips the hot water step, you're not getting the beta-glucans, which are arguably the most well-researched bioactive compounds in the medicinal mushroom world.
Beta-glucans and triterpenes work through completely different mechanisms in the body, and no single solvent can extract both. Skip either phase, and you lose access to an entire class of the mushroom's bioactive compounds.
Why Both Steps Are Non-Negotiable
Beta-glucans and triterpenes work differently in the body and neither extraction method captures both. That's why a dual extract is the only way to deliver the full-spectrum benefits medicinal mushrooms are known for.
A product that only uses hot water misses the triterpenes. A product that only uses alcohol misses the beta-glucans. A dual extract gets both.
It's also worth noting that performing both extractions correctly requires more than just doing two steps. The optimal temperature, duration, and solvent concentration varies by species. At Mindfull Mycology, we treat extraction as an ongoing science — our protocols are in a constant state of refinement as new research and testing emerges.

Sourcing Quality
Mushrooms vs. Mycelium: A Critical Distinction
Even a properly executed dual extract is only as good as what goes into it. And here's where much of the mushroom supplement industry quietly cuts corners.
Many products on the market, including some well-known brands, are made from mycelium, not mushrooms. Mycelium is the fungal root system, typically grown on grain. The problem is twofold: mycelium contains significantly fewer bioactive compounds than the mushroom fruit body, and mycelium grown on grain is practically impossible to fully separate from that grain before processing. The result is a supplement that's largely powdered cereal with trace amounts of fungal material.
At Mindfull Mycology, we use 100% mushroom fruit bodies. No mycelium. No grain. No fillers. The difference isn't subtle. It's the difference between a product that works and one that doesn't.
What About the Alcohol Content?
A common concern with tinctures is the alcohol. It's worth putting this in perspective: a typical dose of a dual extract tincture contains roughly the same amount of alcohol as a glass of orange juice. For the vast majority of people, this is a non-issue.
How Mindfull Mycology Goes Further
A standard homestyle dual extract — the kind made with a mason jar and a crockpot — is a good start. But it has real limitations in terms of how efficiently it extracts compounds from the mushroom material.
We use a piece of laboratory equipment called an ultrasonic processor, or ultrasonic homogenizer, which uses sound waves rather than heat to extract the mushrooms. THis alows us to avoid the degradation of heat-sensitive compounds.
The result is a significantly more efficient extraction, meaning more medicinal compounds per milliliter in your bottle than nearly anywhere else. You can read the full breakdown in Ultrasonic Extraction: Why We Do What We Do.

The Dual Extract Checklist
✦ Is it a dual extract? (Both hot water and alcohol extraction performed)
✦ Is it made from fruit bodies, not mycelium?
✦ Does the brand disclose its extraction process?
✦ Is there any third-party testing to verify potency?
*****If a brand can't answer yes to all four, keep looking*****
