Taoist monks consumed it for spiritual clarity. For over one thousand years, it was considered too precious and too rare for common people to access.

Obviously, Reishi won't make you immortal. But the modern research into what it actually does is compelling enough that the ancient reverence starts to make sense.

What Is Reishi?

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum or Ganoderma linghzhi) depending on whom you ask and where in the world you are) is a woody, bracket-forming polypore mushroom found growing on the base of hardwood trees, particularly oaks and maples, across Asia, Europe, and North America. In the wild it's relatively rare, which is part of what made it so prized historically. Today it's cultivated commercially, making consistent, high-quality supplementation possible.

Visually, Reishi is distinctive: a glossy, kidney-shaped cap with a deep reddish-brown lacquered surface that looks almost artificial. It produces no gills. Instead, its underside is covered in tiny white pores that release billions of spores. The fruiting body is tough and woody, not something you'd cook and eat. It's used almost exclusively as an extract.

One reliable quality indicator: a genuine Reishi extract made from fruit bodies is intensely, almost unpleasantly bitter. That bitterness is the triterpenes at work. If your Reishi supplement tastes like nothing, something is wrong with it.

The Two Compound Classes Behind Reishi's Benefits

Reishi's medicinal profile comes primarily from two classes of compounds and understanding both is key to understanding why extraction method matters so much.

Beta-glucans are complex polysaccharides found in the cell walls of the mushroom fruit body. Reishi is one of the most beta-glucan-dense mushrooms known, with up to 50% of its dry fruit body weight composed of them. The specific type most relevant here is 1,3/1,6 beta-glucans, which are water-soluble and extracted in the hot water phase of a dual extraction. These are the compounds primarily responsible for Reishi's immune-modulating effects.

Triterpenes, specifically Ganoderic acids and lucidenic acids, named after Reishi's taxonomic name Ganoderma lucidum, are a class of over 100 unique compounds found almost exclusively in Reishi fruit bodies. They are alcohol-soluble, not water-soluble, meaning they require the alcohol extraction phase of a dual extract to be captured. These are completely absent in Reishi mycelium, which is one of the most important reasons to insist on fruit body products.
